NYTIMES ASSIGNMENT: Hope all is well. I’m a photo editor at The New York Times, on the Opinion desk. I’m working on a forthcoming essay, and wanted to reach out. I thought of your body of work Regard, and wondered if perhaps there was an image in your archive (perhaps from Fixer, or more recent and not on your website?) that we could consider running with an essay by Pepper Stetler on the outdated income limits imposed on disabled people that discourage or prevent them from marrying. The essay describes how marriage between two SSI beneficiaries results in a devastating decrease in financial support, and argues that disabled adults shouldn’t have to choose between marriage or support. I’m imagining the image could be a tighter detail (like in Fixer – perhaps a ring on a finger and curious about other ideas you may have). If this is something you may have or are interested in, I’d love to share a rough draft of the essay for your eyes only. I’m not sure we have time for a commission, as the essay is scheduled to publish on Sunday, so we’d need to have the image in house by Friday noon, but I’m also happy to talk this through.
